“Is It Worth Your Time and Money?” Your Smart Roadmap to Cosmetic Treatments

Skincare meets clarity with board-certified dermatologist Dr. Caroline Robinson. In the second episode, she explains how to build a preventative routine and when to consider in-office treatments so you preserve collagen, age confidently, and stay true to your features.

Your foundation: the only daily trio you need

  • Sunscreen SPF 30+ broad spectrum every day. Consistency beats price.
  • Topical retinoids to help maintain collagen. Prescription tretinoin is gold standard; adapalene is an OTC retinoid option.
  • Antioxidants, especially vitamin C to support collagen and help even tone. Stick to this core and you will resist trend-chasing.

Skin quality first: low downtime, high payoff

  • Medical microneedling boosts collagen and improves texture and pigment with controlled micro-injury.
  • RF microneedling can add heat, but Dr. Robinson avoids it in her practice due to risk–benefit balance.
  • Chemical peels are great as a reset for acne or pigment; choose microneedling over peels for maintenance.
  • Fractional lasers create precise columns of injury for faster healing; ablative lasers deliver bigger changes with more downtime.
  • Skin boosters micro-droplets of dilute hyaluronic acid that hydrate and soften fine lines for 6 to 12 months.Expect a few days of redness from microneedling, similar for many lasers; peels can flake for about a week.

Injectables: tools, not transformations

  • Botox softens expression lines by dialing down muscle–nerve signaling for smoother, not frozen, movement.
  • Fillers replace volume loss; use the simple “sink or sag” self-check on the cheeks to see if you might benefit. Keep results conservative and restorative. Aging happens in multiple layers of skin, fat, and bone, plus lifestyle. Nutrition, stress, and habits matter.

Energy devices and nice-to-haves

  • Radio Frequency and ultrasound can subtly tighten by stimulating collagen, reaching supportive layers under the skin.
  • Red LED is helpful for recovery and skin calming. Useful, not mandatory.

When to think surgery

If earlier steps do not meet goals or genetics demand more, options like facelifts, eyelid procedures, or selective lipo may be considered. Use the roadmap first.

Dr. Robinson’s cheat sheet

  • Non-Negotiable: sunscreen, retinoid, vitamin C.
  • Prioritize: skin quality treatments that build collagen.
  • Less is more with injectables. Keep your face looking like you.
